The UK Government's Health & Safety Executive Body have stipulated that ALL airlines flying into and out of the UK can no longer load bags weighing more than 32kgs onto an aircraft. Any baggage item in excess of the maximum 32 kgs, on all routes, will be subject to re-packing or refusal of carriage and applicable excess baggage charges will be levied.
General Baggage Allowances for Major Airlines to the USA.
The allowances shown here are for international economy travel. Additional allowances may be available for certain airline frequent flyer members or for passengers travelling in business of first class. For US-domestic flights, not connecting to a transatlantic flight, additional baggage charges may apply. Virgin Atlantic (VS)
Bookings made before 24th November 2009: 2 x bags 23KG max (USA/Caribbean) / 1 x bag 23KG max per piece (all routes except USA/Caribbean)
Bookings made on/after 25th November 2009: 1 x bag 23KG max (all routes). Premium Economy passengers 2 x bags 23KG max.
Excess Charges: Bags weighing over 23KG (but no more than 32KG) GBP30/$50 per bag. Extra bags up to 23KG permitted for charge GBP40/USD60 for first extra bag & GBP90/USD140 for subsequent extra bags. Extra bag fees for online check-in passengers is GBP32/USD48 per extra bag. All extra & heavy bag fees are payable to airline at check-in.
British Airways (BA)
1 x bag 23KG max. Heavy bag fee (for bags weighing 23-32KG) GBP30 per bag. Extra bags up to 23KG permitted for charge GBP40 for first extra bag & GBP90 for subsequent extra bags up to 10 bags maxiumum. Extra bag fees for online check-in passengers is GBP32 per extra bag. All extra & heavy bag fees are payable to airline at check-in.
American Airlines (AA)
1 x bag 23KG max (UK-USA and USA-Caribbean). A second bag up to 23KG is permitted for a charge of $50 payable to the airline upon check-in.
